Girls Matter Conference Seeks to Educate Young Girls and Parents About Vital Issues


DETROIT, Sept. 29, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Girls Matter will host their annual conference on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. The event will also feature 2 workshops, (last year approximately 600 attended). The conference will be held at Schoolcraft College VisTaTech Center 18600 Haggerty Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152.

The Girls Matter Conference is specifically tailored to girls age 9-17, their parents, and professionals who serve girls in the Detroit metropolitan area. This event includes a keynote speaker as well as a variety of workshops addressing many of the pressing issues girls face daily. There has been an annual conference every year since 2002. The Keynote speaker for both events will be Loren Slocum, the founder, CEO and President of Lobella International. The Emcee for both events will be Carolyn Clifford of WXYZ-TV, Channel 7 News.

The conference is an effort to educate girls about self-esteem, cliques, aggression, the importance of nutrition and exercise, goal setting, career building, leadership skills, the reality about dating violence, and body image. We make unique and vital contributions to building happier, healthier and more confident young women and improving and maintaining strong, healthy parent/daughter relationships while working in partnership with community groups, schools and local leaders. The Girls Matter Conference is a collaboration of high- profile activities designed to expose girls and parents to area resources and organizations that support and serve them year around.

The event is sponsored by DTE, Hantz Group, UPS, Michigan Women's Foundation, Pediatrics Associates of Dearborn, Conrad Charitable Foundation, Schoolcraft College and others are sponsors of the Girls Matter Annual Workshop Conference. Their generous contribution will help to pay for (sponsor) scholarships for over 300 girls and their parents to attend the conference.

The Honorable Kathleen M. McCarthy serves in the Family Division of the Wayne County Circuit Court. Judge McCarthy teaches around the country for the Institute of Certified Divorce Financial Analysts, and is the past president of the Wayne County Family Bar Association and other professional and civic organizations. She is the Vice President and co-founder of the Girls Matter Conference.
