New York City Department of Education Extends Exclusive Contract to Mitel

Largest U.S. School System Leverages Mitel Freedom to Deliver Communications Solutions for 300 Schools

PHOENIX, March 1, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mitel (Nasdaq:MITL), a leading provider of unified communications (UC) software solutions, today announced the execution of a new, five-year contract with the New York City Department of Education. Under the terms of the agreement, Mitel will be the exclusive provider of communications solutions for the next 300 New York City schools that plan to replace their existing voice systems. The contract is valued at approximately $43 million over five years.

The Department of Education selected Mitel for its service excellence and the return on investment of Mitel solutions. These new deployments will increase Mitel's footprint to approximately 700 New York schools. Prior to this selection, the Department of Education had split its voice deployments for its schools between multiple providers, including Mitel.

"Mitel has an excellent track record with the Department of Education and the proposal they put forth was in line with what we were looking to achieve. That made Mitel an easy choice when choosing an exclusive communications solutions provider," said Mark Spencer, senior director of telecom services for the Department of Education. "Installing the Mitel solution for these 300 schools means we will be equipped to take advantage of IP applications in the future that enhance the safety and security of our schools and help them run more efficiently."

The Department of Education's new communications solution is based on the Mitel Freedom architecture, a single, cloud-ready software stream that delivers a full range of communications options for organizations looking to integrate a voice solution into best-in-class networks and applications.

"We applaud the New York City Department of Education's decision to invest in its schools by selecting a vendor that can provide the communications network they need today with the flexibility to adopt advanced UC applications in the future," said Matt Oess, vice-president of Mitel's Global, National, and Government accounts. "This strategy will help to drive lower total cost of ownership and deliver enhanced communications with faculty, students, parents, and staff."

The New York City Department of Education is the largest school system in the United States, with approximately 1.1 million students taught in more than 1,700 separate schools across all five of New York City's boroughs.
