MADISON, Wis., Dec. 7, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- While most publishers are focused on turning a profit over during the gift-giving season, Tyrus Books, a division of F+W Media, is doing the opposite. Publisher Ben LeRoy announced earlier this week that he will send free books to anyone who wants them, no strings attached.
"This is a little different and probably not what they teach at business school, but we're not really MBA types," LeRoy states on the Tyrus website. "We're in the business of making sure people have a chance to read and enjoy books, because we think books are the cornerstones of so many wonderful experiences in life."
LeRoy's primary goal is to help people who don't have the money participate in the holidays, either by receiving books for themselves or sending them to friends and family members. It's as simple as sending an email, requesting a book or two, and letting Tyrus know where to ship the books. If they feel inclined to donate a buck or two to cover the shipping costs, they can do so via Paypal. Donations over $10 won't be accepted and leftover funds will be donated to a literacy charity.
An unlimited free giveaway isn't a typical promotion for any business trying to turn a profit, but LeRoy is far from a typical businessman.
"By pretty much all standards, I was, and may continue to be, unqualified to run a publishing company," he stated in a Huffington Post article last year. "I have no business background, I never interned at a big publishing house or prestigious agency. Just about the only thing I had going for me was that I had always loved books and I am endlessly fascinated by people's stories."
His passion for books, willingness to take risks, and innovative ideas have been the keys to his publishing success. LeRoy was the publisher of BleakHouse Books, a division of Big Earth Publishing, before leaving to start Tyrus Books. In the spring of 2011 (after reading that same Huffington Post article) Tyrus Books was purchased by F+W Media, one of the largest special interest publishers in the world.
Tyrus Books have been nominated for and/or won most of the major awards in crime fiction including the Edgar, the Shamus, the Anthony, and the Barry. Other accolades include Lambda Award nominations, a Florida Book Award, and a Southern California Independent Booksellers Association nomination.
