Versant and Electrotank Tackle Online Gaming's Big Data Challenges With Java and NoSQL at QCon New York

Joint Speaking Session Shows How to Maximize Online Gaming Performance by Addressing Big Data's Complexity and Scaling Issues

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 13, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Versant Corporation (Nasdaq:VSNT), a worldwide leader in developing data management software infrastructure for complex, mission-critical applications, today announced that it will deliver a joint speaking session at QCon New York 2012 with one of the leading providers of high-performance online game technology, Electrotank. Big data's challenges of volume, variety and velocity are highly-prevalent in the multiplayer online gaming industry, and this joint session will offer a practical example of how Java-based standards and NoSQL technologies can be used in conjunction to solve these problems.

Versant's VP of Technology, Robert Greene, will present the session, "Can Java Still Be Sexy? NoSQL says YES!" with Electrotank's Director of Platform Engineering, RJ Lorimer. The session will explore how Electrotank used Versant's new JPA for NoSQL solution to increase the persistence, performance and scalability of the Electrotank Universe Platform (EUP), a Java-based client-server development framework that provides scalable and extensible architecture, systems and tools for creating data-driven, content-rich MMOs, virtual worlds, social games, and serious games for browsers and mobile devices.

"Multiplayer games live and die by their performance," said Lorimer. "And given how feature rich and interactive these games are today, it's absolutely critical that developers aren't limited by the performance or complexity of their persistence model. Developers should to be able to focus their efforts on implementing critical game features, and the storage model should cater to their scaling and performance needs; not the other way around. Being able to leverage the benefits of NoSQL without having to abandon standard and familiar coding models has been invaluable in reaching this goal. I think there is a lot of value in this talk for anyone that has struggled with these issues."
