Versant Announces Paul McCullugh as New Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing

Appointment Marks Return of Database Industry Veteran to Versant as the Company's NoSQL Solutions Become Critical for Enterprises to Leverage Big Data

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 29, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Versant Corporation (Nasdaq:VSNT), a worldwide leader in developing data management software infrastructure for complex, mission-critical applications, announced today the appointment of Paul McCullugh as Executive Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Marketing.

Mr. McCullugh brings 20 years of sales and marketing experience to Versant, including a diverse background in complex high performance database and middleware applications, open source products, and cloud services. He has directly sold and built sales and marketing teams that collectively have generated hundreds of millions in business value for customers in many vertical industries.

This new appointment represents Mr. McCullugh's return to Versant after a twelve year hiatus. As Vice President of Sales at Versant, he led a team to record performance in 2000. In addition to his experience with Versant, Mr. McCullugh has a solid track record of success managing both direct and in-direct customer relationships in commercial and open source software markets, including cloud business models. He comes to Versant following a very successful six year career at Oracle, where he held various sales positions in the Technology division, most recently as Sr. Director of Cloud Services. Prior to Oracle, Mr. McCullugh was Sr. Director of Sales for Sleepycat Software, an open source database company that was acquired by Oracle in 2006. Prior to Sleepycat, Mr. McCullugh held Executive Sales positions with several VC backed start-ups.

"Given the current state of the database industry, it's especially exciting to return to Versant," said McCullugh. "Not only do enterprises have far more data in general these days, but the demands for being able to access the relevant bits of that data in real time, and the complexity of the applications for that data, have grown tremendously. This has put the spotlight on NoSQL, and Versant's brand of NoSQL technologies have a proven ability to deliver in these changing enterprise data requirements. I'm really looking forward to taking Versant's sales teams to new heights again."
