Alice Veterinarian Provides Pet Owners Option of Veterinary Surgery

ALICE, Texas, Sept. 23, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Alamosa Animal Hospital in Alice, TX announced that the veterinary practice provides surgical care for cats and dogs. The veterinary hospital also offers urgent and emergency animal surgery following a traumatic event, such as a pet being hit by a car. Alice vet Dr. Clay R. Brieger performs a variety of surgical operations, including spay and neuter surgeries and advanced orthopedic care.

Alice veterinarian Dr. Clay R. Brieger is educating pet owners about the animal surgery procedures available at Alamosa Animal Hospital. These procedures including spay and neuter surgery and orthopedic operations.

"At our animal hospital, we recognize that even 'routine' animal surgery can be a stressful experience for both pets and their owners," said Dr. Brieger. "We do everything possible to ensure the safety and comfort of our patients. We follow strict pain management protocols for anesthesia."

Prior to an operation, digital radiography and other diagnostic tests are used to determine the precise location for surgery. The vet hospital's in-house lab supports advanced diagnostic services, including blood chemistry panels necessary prior to anesthesia administration.

"Our surgical suite includes an in-house lab for immediate results to our diagnostic tests," said Dr. Brieger. "The in-house lab is just one way that our hospital goes above and beyond to ensure the safety of each animal."

During the operation, the veterinary team monitors heart rate and breathing. Dr. Brieger recommends that pets should abstain from food at least 12 hours prior to animal surgery. According to the veterinarian, this reduces the risk for complications should the pet experience a negative reaction to anesthesia.

Following an operation, Dr. Brieger and his team monitor the pet during the immediate recovering period. Depending on the pet's health condition and the type of operation, some pets may be kept overnight for care at the animal hospital's pet boarding facilities.

"We know pet owners are anxious to see their animals after surgery," said Dr. Brieger. "Once the effects of anesthesia have worn off and the pet is in a stable condition, we will send the animal home for recovery. We send all pets home with detailed recovery instructions. Our on-site pharmacy will fill any necessary pain prescriptions."

In addition to animal surgery, the veterinary hospital also offers non-invasive alternatives, such as laser therapy. Depending on a pet's age and wellness needs, a non-invasive option may produce a better outcome for the animal than traditional surgery.

"For senior pets, orthopedic surgery is a serious operation that may be too much for the older animal's body," said Dr. Brieger. "That's why we are proud to offer alternative treatments, including laser therapy."

In addition to surgical operations, the animal hospital provides wellness exams, vaccinations, and pet boarding for the San Diego, Mathis, and Aqua Dulce pet communities. Pet owners can learn more at http://www.alamosaanimalhospital.com.
