CLP Power Selects Nokia’s TETRA System – a New TETRA System for 800 MHz Frequencies

Nokia has been awarded the contract to supply an 800MHz TETRA system to CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) in Hong Kong.

The contract covers a complete Nokia 800MHz TETRA system, including digital exchanges, base stations, dispatcher equipment, a network management system and terminals.

Jonathan Yip, General Manager, Nokia Networks, Nokia (H.K.) Limited, said, "This contract further strengthens the position of the TETRA standard in China. We are delighted to supply a new Nokia 800MHz TETRA System to CLP Power, bringing the system’s many benefits - speed, reliability and availability to customers in Hong Kong."

Moving from the traditional analogue voice to digital multimedia communications systems, this TETRA system also offers CLP Power an open platform for scalable and reliable applications development. This implementation paves the way for data applications, such as telemetry, SCADA, WAP over TETRA, Automatic Vessel Location (AVL), etc. in the future.

"We chose Nokia as our TETRA network supplier because of their cost effective solutions, proven leadership in TETRA technology, innovative radio terminal and strong local support. With TETRA technology, we are confident that our operations will benefit from the most advanced, reliable and secure communications system available. As a result, our 2 million customers will be better served," said Ted Woodley, General Manager – Power Systems of CLP Power.

The TETRA system will further strengthen communications for CLP Power’s operational staff through an “all-in-one" solution integrating TMR (Trunked Mobile Radio), mobile phone and pager functions. It also provides secure communications as well as a wireless data communications platform for various innovative applications. The system will be rolled out later this year. At that time, it will be the first commercial corporation in Hong Kong to own such an advanced professional mobile radio system.

TETRA networks offer secure, digital mobile communication for public safety and security organizations, network operators, transportation and utility companies.
As proof of Nokia's leading capabilities in TETRA development, IP packet data over the TETRA System has been introduced. Additionally, Nokia has introduced the world's first WAP services for digital professional mobile radio users.

Combining user requirements and Nokia's leading edge technology, the Nokia TETRA System offers future-proof solutions for the 21st century. Nokia is offering a range of end-to-end solutions that incorporate the latest TETRA technology, various data applications and related systems integration and support services. Since the system's functions are software based, future developments and enhancements to the system can be easily introduced without disturbing the existing network.
