Nokia launches world's first 3GPP compliant E-OTD positioning system

Nokia today launched the world's first industry standardized Enhanced Observed Time Difference (E-OTD) location technology. The Nokia E-OTD solution supports all location applications segments, including emergency service callers, commercial location-based services and operator services.

Nokia’s E-OTD technology is a 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) standardized solution with industry leadership in accuracy and quality.

"Location information is something we all can and will use. It builds a crucial dimension to mobile applications and adds value to mobile terminal users by improving their safety, productivity and quality of life in general," said Matti Lankinen, General Manager, Location Communication Systems Business Program of Nokia, "Location-based applications have wide appeal across all customer segments. They enable personalization of content and are thus a major source of revenue for the mobile operator. "

In November 2000, Nokia signed its first commercial agreement for the delivery of E-OTD technology to AT&T Wireless in the USA to serve, for example, E911 emergency call needs.

The Nokia E-OTD system is part of Nokia mPosition Solution - a complete end-to-end solution providing operators with location based services for mobile networks, including redundancy, security, profiling and API's. With location-based information and applications, mobile subscribers can access a range of new, personally relevant services, such as traffic and weather reports, restaurants, theatre or movie ticket bookings. Also, emergency services will be an important area for location based data.

Nokia mPosition Solution supports various location methods such as Cell ID based location method, E-OTD and in the future Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS).
Nokia mPosition Solution is designed to support multivendor environments enabling operators to introduce location based services for current markets. The solution also provides a secure growth path from 2G to 3G, bringing a completely new dimension into operators' value-added business portfolio.

Nokia is the world leader in mobile communications. Backed by its experience, innovation, user-friendliness and secure solutions, the company has become the leading supplier of mobile phones and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks. By adding mobility to the Internet Nokia creates new opportunities for companies and further enriches the daily lives of people. Nokia is a broadly held company with listings on six major exchanges.
