A Charmed Life -- New Book Recounts Many Near-Death Experiences of One Lucky Man

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 2, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Shot down over the Pacific, nearly electrocuted, almost killed by a drunk driver, Wesley E. Dickinson has dealt with it all. In his new book, I Was Lucky (now available through 1stBooks), he recounts his close calls with life and death.

Dickinson begins his book by covering the first 21 years of his life that includes his family history, schools and nearly being electrocuted by 600 volts from an amateur radio. A hitch hiked ride became a near death experience when the driver turned out to be a drunk with a chip on his shoulder about drivers in the oncoming lane. He covers his years spent in college and the trains he would hop, not very expertly, to get there from his home.

Dickinson's luck truly showed itself when he became a bomber pilot in the South Pacific during World War II. His many close calls, near escapes and just in time maneuvers averted imminent tragedy. There are accounts of flying in thick fog, landing with flat tires and being shot down that killed almost his entire crew and wounded him, but could have been much worse.

I Was Lucky invites readers to an autobiography about a charmed man and his many adventures in life and love.

Dickinson grew up in Dilworth, Minn., a town with a few wooden sidewalks, no water system and a population under a thousand. After graduating from North Dakota State College with a degree in electrical engineering, he immediately joined the Army Air Corps because the pay was better, he notes. He flew combat missions over Papua, New Guinea and was one of few in his group that survived the war. After the war, he entered into engineering and became a key figure in the development of the first hard disk memory for computers. I Was Lucky, his charmed life story, is his first book.
