PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 11, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- A perfect treat to sweeten up your winter! Sweet Treats Weekend will take place on Saturday, February 3 and Sunday, February 4, 2007, from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Blue Cross RiverRink at Penn's Landing, Columbus Boulevard at Market Street.
Ice skaters and candy lovers will be treated to a special weekend that features sweets! Candy crafts and samples will delight the young and young at heart. Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive "Sweet Skills" games that will put their skills and love of sweets to the test. From chocolate chip cookie eating contests, cookie dough sculpting to cupcake stacking and Chocolate guessing jars, there will be "sweet" fun for everyone!
Sweet Treats Weekend will feature a special visit from WONDERGY. Bringing excitement to the celebration, WONDERGY founder Ken Fink will explore "Sweet Science" such as the chemical properties of ice cream and cotton candy. Interactive and engaging projects and demonstrations, coupled with irreverent humor, the WONDERGY staff will provide free science experiments during the Sweet Treats Weekend festivities, allowing kids and adults to understand how science is part of everyday life including ice cream or cotton candy.
WONDERGY will bring nitrogen in liquid form, so cold that it's still stuck together, more than 320 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. They will send it flying away by warming it up with cream, milk, chocolate, and other flavors to make the coolest ice cream you've ever tasted. The science of the Blue Cross RiverRink is the same science that makes all sorts of sweet treats possible. This free presentation will create a fun and educational experience for visitors to the Blue Cross RiverRink.
Just in time for Valentine's Day, there will also be special edible candy crafts such as Lollipop Puppets and Sugar Art. Guests will also have an opportunity to create conversation heart cards. Free Valentine's-themed face painting, and a balloon artist will add to the excitement!
For those with a sweet tooth, there will be complimentary Peanut Chews samples from Just Born Candy, Inc., along with Sweet Treats Culinary Demonstrations. JNA Culinary Arts and other local chefs will present demonstrations of confections and various sweet treats with of course free samples for all who participate!
After working off the "sugar rush" by ice skating on the Olympic-size skating rink, visitors can catch a few moments of a favorite SWEET film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which will be broadcast on the giant video wall to keep within the theme of the weekend.
Sweet Treats Weekend activities are FREE to the public. Weekend skating sessions cost $6.00 per person (skate rental is $3.00) and are available during the delicious weekend from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.
