The Power Situation in Norway as of 31 March 2004

Lysaker, 31 March 2004

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

In week 13, the influx to Norwegian hydropower reservoirs was about normal. The reservoir level fell with 2.1 percentage points during the week, and was 27.9 per cent full as of Monday 29 March. This is 5.8 per cent higher than the corresponding week last year. In Sweden, the reservoir content was 14.5 per cent at the beginning of week 14, after a drop of 2.1 percentage points through week 13. The level in Sweden is 3.4 per cent higher than last year's figure.

The production from Norwegian hydropower producers increased as a result of growing Norwegian and Swedish power consumption and reduced Danish production. This led to a decrease in the Norwegian net import from week 12 with more than 200 GWh. Nevertheless, Norway was the net importer of energy during week 13. The prices in the German spot market approached the Nordic prices in week 13. This contributed to increased export from Sweden and Denmark to Germany.

The power prices for household customers are now stable. Up to and including week 16 the standard variable power price will vary between 0. 334 NOK/kWh and 0.335 NOK/kWh. In week 13, the average spot price was 0.257 NOK/kWh. Therefore for the first time this year, a customer with a market contract (spot) and a mark-up of 0.025 NOK/kWh paid more than a customer with an average standard variable contract.
