The Power Situation in Norway as of 17 March

Lysaker, 17 March 2004

Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

The Norwegian hydropower reservoirs were 30.9 per cent as of Monday 15 March, after a decrease of 2.6 percentage points through week 11. During week 11, the influx has been well below normal. During week 12, influx and precipitation above normal is expected. The Swedish reservoir levels are now 18.3 per cent after a hydropower reservoir tapping of 2.8 percentage points in week 11.

The Nordic consumption fell from week 10 to week 11. Fairly unchanged production in our neighbouring countries led to reduced Nordic production and increased Norwegian net import from 113 GWh in week 10 to 190 GWh in week 11. High prices in Germany also resulted in a high Nordic net export to Germany in week 11. Stable import from Russia and Poland has, nevertheless, led to a Nordic net import.

A spot price of 0.258 NOK/kWh as in week 11, yields a price of 0.345 NOK/kWh to the end user with a market contract assuming a mark-up of 0.025 NOK/kWh. This is 0.008 NOK/kWh lower than the average standard variable contract for the same week. In week 14, the average price of a standard variable contract yields a price of 0.335 NOK/kWh, which is no change from week 13.
