SMART Modular Technologies Introduces Low-Power 4GB DDR3 Registered DIMM Tailored for Server Applications

Designed Using 8-Bit DRAMs for Low-Power, This Memory Module Features a Quad-Rank Architecture to Cost-Effectively Enable High Densities and a Single Register for Reduced Memory Bus Loading

FREMONT, CA--(Marketwire - January 7, 2008) - SMART Modular Technologies (WWH), Inc. (SMART) (NASDAQ: SMOD), a leading independent manufacturer of memory modules, embedded computing subsystems, and TFT-LCD display products, has introduced a low-power 4GB DDR3 registered DIMM (RDIMM) tailored for server applications. SMART's DDR3 memory module offers OEMs multiple benefits, including 8-bit DRAMs for low-power, quad-rank architecture to cost-effectively enable high densities, and a single register design for reduced memory bus loading.

Lowering power consumption in servers is an industry-wide challenge. DDR3 technology, compared to DDR2, overcomes this challenge by reducing power consumption, while offering the additional benefits of higher overall memory capacities and improved system speeds (up to 667Mhz/1333MHz data rate). In addition to the inherent benefits of DDR3 technology, SMART uses 8-bit (instead of 4-bit) DRAMs to reduce the number of active DRAMs per rank from 18 to 9 and emerging mainstream DDR3 1Gb (128Mx8) components to achieve cost-effective high memory density.

SMART's design employs a single register, which allows OEMs to implement more high-density DIMMs per processor without overloading their system. The speed grades supported by the new DDR3 registered quad-rank 8-bit DIMM include DDR3-1066 (PC3-8500) and DDR3-133 (PC3-10600). "SMART is working with its industry partners to help enable a smooth transition to DDR3 technology," explained Arthur Sainio, SMART's Senior Product Marketing Manager. "DDR3 memory modules designed for lower power, reduced memory bus loading and higher densities will help drive the launch of leading-edge system hardware."

This new RoHS-compliant design features a quad-rank architecture that is supported by industry-leading processor companies such as Intel® (NASDAQ: INTC) and AMD (NYSE: AMD). Many OEM server platforms using DDR3 memory technology are already in development, which should result in DDR3 RDIMM shipments gaining momentum in the second half of 2008. According to Nam Hyung Kim, a DRAM analyst at iSuppli, DDR3 registered DIMM for servers will grow from 0.8 million units in 2008 to 5.5 million units in 2009, and climb to 22.7 million units in 2011.
