Marygrove College's Dr. Steven Scribner Receives Campus Compact Award

Honored for Service-Learning Contributions


DETROIT, Feb. 14, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. Steven Scribner, associate professor of Chemistry at Marygrove College, was honored with an Michigan Campus Compact Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning Award at the 12th annual Institute: Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, on Thursday, February 7, 2008. This prestigious annual award is the highest MCC bestows on faculty and staff in the state of Michigan.

Dr. Steven Scribner was designated by peers as the faculty/staff person on campus who has made the most outstanding contributions in service-learning and community service. This award recognizes his influence on and the engagement of students to be involved in community service or service-learning through modeling, influencing or instruction. He was nominated by Sr. Barbara Beesley, Service Learning Coordinator/Campus Minister at Marygrove College.

Dr. Scribner helped facilitate a service-learning study abroad class to Puerto Rico two summers ago. He prepared the students for this learning experience and went beyond the call of duty in numerous instances. As one of the faculty teaching Marygrove's first year students, Dr. Scribner encourages community service as it relates to themes from the specific novel the new students are reading for class.

A Marygrove College faculty member for 10 years, Dr. Scribner received his Bachelor of Science from Alma College; his Master of Science from Michigan State University; and his Ph.D. from Wayne State University, all in chemistry.
