The power situation in Norway as of 30 April 2008

Lysaker, 30 April 2008
Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

Decrease in Norwegian production
The Norwegian power production went down by 11 percent from week 16 to 2359 GWh in week 17. That is the lowest weekly production so far this year. The decrease is primarily due to lower power demand as the weather is getting milder. This resulted in lower prices of electricity. At the same time the limitation on the transmission capacity between Southern-Norway and Sweden increased in week 17 and the export from Southern-Norway to Sweden decreased by about 100 GWh from the week before.

In the next weeks, however, the production is expected to get higher. There are large quantities of snow in the mountains, and according to meteorological forecasts the snow melting is going to give an inflow much higher than normal in the present week.

A spot price contract, with a 1.9 øre/kWh mark-up, would have given a price of 29.2 øre/kWh to a consumer in the south of Norway. That is a decrease of 5.2 øre compared to the week before. The same contract in Middle- and Northern Norway would have given a price of 48.2 øre/kWh in both areas. That is a decrease of 2.5 øre in Middle-Norway and 1.5 øre in Northern-Norway
