NYC Homeowners Can Stop Lawn Litter for Free At StopLawnLitter.org

BROOKLYN, N.Y., May 22, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- New York City residents finally have a way to stop the constant barrage of flyers, menus and advertising materials dropped at their doors and in their yards. By enrolling in the free Stop Lawn Litter Registry at http.www.StopLawnLitter.org homeowners can eliminate the nuisance of "lawn litter." The new Lawn Litter Law (NYS Chapter 585 of 2007) enables homeowners to opt-out of receiving advertising materials delivered door-to-door. The law was championed by State Senator Frank Padavan and Assemblyman Mark Weprin and became effective January 1, 2008.

Property owners will find the enrollment process easy and intuitive. After registering, homeowners are sent a legally-compliant sign to post on their property telling distributors their homes are off-limits to door-to-door advertising.

Advertisers and distributors that drop materials in violation of a properly posted sign can be fined $250 per first-offense. Fines are even higher for repeat offenders.

The StopLawnLitter.org effort will remove tons of paper from our waste stream. NYC spends millions of dollars annually on trash disposal. Less paper tonnage will lower those costs, and many trees will be saved. The free Stop Lawn Litter Registry will have a positive environmental impact nationwide, as fewer pollutants enter our watersheds from landfills and paper mills.

"We're homeowners in the city ourselves," says StopLawnLitter.org co-founder David K. Smith. "We've been cleaning up our yards for years and with the passage of the Lawn Litter Law, we decided to develop a system to help our neighbors fight lawn litter."

Cleaning up after advertisers has been co-founder Michael Winiarski's pet peeve for years. "I've made countless calls to distributors' offices with poor results," he says. "Now, thanks to Senator Padavan's new law, all I have to do to stop the litter is post my free sign from StopLawnLitter.org."
