Orion Energy Systems Wins Clean Air Award

Annual Award Given to Companies Working to Improve Air Quality

MANITOWOC, Wis., May 29, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Orion Energy Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:OESX) received the Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air recognition award on May 22 for its innovative strategies to reduce harmful greenhouse gases.

The award was presented to Orion at The Clean Air Extravaganza at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Since 1996, Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air has recognized Wisconsin companies or organizations that take voluntary actions to improve air quality.

Orion Energy Systems is a leading power technology enterprise that designs, manufactures and implements energy management systems and high performance lighting solutions.

Orion's technology reduces light-related electricity usage and costs for its customers by approximately 50 percent while increasing light output by the same amount. The reduction in electricity usage results in less emissions of harmful greenhouse gases.

Orion President and CEO Neal Verfuerth said the award reinforces the company's ideals of providing environmentally responsible technology to customers without compromise.

"It's an honor to receive the Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air award," Verfuerth said. "It's nice to be recognized for helping companies throughout Wisconsin and North America reduce harmful emissions through decreased energy use, which will improve air quality for generations."

John Baldus, bioproduct sector specialist with the state Office of Energy Independence, nominated Orion Energy Systems for the award because Orion is a leading innovator in energy efficiency.

"The energy Orion is able to save its customers and the associated reduction in emissions is producing a healthier environment," Baldus said.

Orion has deployed its energy management systems in 3,655 facilities across North America. Since 2001, Orion technology has displaced more than 334 megawatts, saving customers more than $351 million and reducing indirect carbon dioxide emissions by 4.4 million tons.

About the Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air

The Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air (WPCA) program is a coalition of more than 260 businesses, community organizations, schools and government agencies committed to improving air quality through voluntary action. Leaders in Wisconsin founded the WPCA in 1996 when six southeastern Wisconsin counties were recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as having one of the most severe ground-level ozone problems in the U.S. The WPCA continues to educate Wisconsin businesses and residents on air quality issues and works to effect behavioral change to improve air quality and reduce harmful air emissions as required by Wisconsin's state implementation plan under the federal Clean Air Act.
