The power situation in Norway as of 11 June 2008

Lysaker, 11 June 2008
Nord Pool has received the following information from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE):

High temperatures and low consumption of electricity
The warm weather made for lower Nordic power consumption in week 23 compared to the week before. In Norway, the weekly consumption was 1917 GWh, which is the lowest level since august last year.

In southern Norway, the weather contributed to falling prices. Average weekly spotprice was 10 øre/kWh in this area, down 2 øre from the week before. Export capacity from South-Norway is still reduced, and the prices are substantially lower compared to the other Nordic price areas. Prices in the two northern Norwegian price areas, however, follow prices in the rest of the Nordic areas. In the middle and north of Norway, average prices were 48 and 47 øre/kWh respectively. Low Swedish nuclear power production and less wind in Denmark made for increasing prices in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and at the same time in the middle- and north of Norway.

The inflow to the Norwegian reservoirs was 9.1 TWh in week 23, which is 50 percent more than normal. The high inflow made the Norwegian reservoir level rice by 8.2 percent during week 23. At the end of the week, the Norwegian reservoir level was at 64.6 percent.
