AAA TEXAS: State Gas Prices Fall Slightly in Some Cities and Continue to Remain Stable Week to Week

IRVING, TX--(Marketwire - April 23, 2009) - For more than a month, motorists in Texas have continued to enjoy stable gasoline prices below two dollars a gallon and almost $1.50 lower than they were this date one year ago. This is happening as world crude oil prices also remain stable, now trading below $50 dollars a barrel today on the NYMEX exchange.

The statewide average in Texas is $1.97, down almost a penny from last week. Nationally, prices increased by slightly more than a penny to $2.06 cents a gallon.

Dallas has the most expensive gas in Texas at $1.986, but that's down almost two cents per gallon from last week when gasoline chipped through the $2.00 a gallon mark.

At $1.92, San Antonio has the least expensive gas.

Worldwide demand for oil and gasoline remains very soft and according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the worldwide recession is the main reason why. Demand has dropped to its lowest level in five years. And the U.S. Department of Energy says total average daily fuel demand this spring is down more than 5% compared to last year.

"Typically this is the time of year AAA Texas sees what some call a 'Spring Spike' in gasoline prices. Certainly we saw it last year, but this year it hasn't happened. Even though gasoline is more expensive than it was in late January and February, we've gone several weeks with gasoline averaging around $2.00 a gallon or less in both Texas and nationally. Motorists are continuing to conserve fuel and drive less," said AAA Texas spokesman Dan Ronan.
