IIJ and Microsoft Embark on Project to Offer Cloud-Based Services

Virtualization Technology Hyper-V (TM) and Other Products From Microsoft's Platform Product Suite to be Offered Starting in May 2010 Using IIJ's Cloud-Computing Platform

TOKYO, Oct. 27, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) (Nasdaq:IIJI) (TSE1:3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced it will use Microsoft's platform product suite -- including the latest virtualization technology, Hyper-V(TM) -- on IIJ's cloud computing platform IIJ GIO (*1) to provide specialized platform services in a Windows Server(R) environment starting in May 2010. With this service, corporate customers will be able to use their Windows Server-compatible applications in a cloud-computing environment without modification.

With the release of this new service, Microsoft Co., Ltd., working with each of its software partners, will test each application to ensure a smooth transition for corporate customers to cloud computing. Joint marketing activities for this service will commence in November 2009. IIJ is targeting 4,000 server sales in the first three years of operation.

This service enables customers to build a flexible cloud-computing environment by selecting only those server resources (CPU, memory, disk space) necessary to meet the needs of each business, and without the extra work of building one's own corporate server. Using the Dynamic Datacenter Tool Kit to build data centers for cloud computing -- with applications such as Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization technology and the System Center administration tool -- in conjunction with the advanced cloud platform of IIJ GIO, IIJ will provide cloud services optimized for a corporate system environment built on Windows Server. With this configuration, each corporate user can easily and quickly build a cloud-based Windows Server environment that is equivalent to their existing system without modifying existing applications.

In the future, IIJ and Microsoft will perform joint technology testing with the aim of providing services that can be run either on the company's own system or on a cloud environment -- whichever is more appropriate -- in order to meet the broad needs of our corporate customers.
