Exalt to Demonstrate Live LTE-Ready Microwave Backhaul Network at CTIA Wireless 2010

Live Network From Edge Access to Aggregation/Core Features Company's Extensive Carrier-Class Product Portfolio for Mobile Operator Networks With Any Combination of 2G to 4G Technologies

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwire - March 23, 2010) -  Exalt Communications, the company that is reinventing microwave backhaul, will demonstrate at CTIA this week a live, hybrid TDM/IP end-to-end microwave backhaul network for mobile operator transport infrastructures from edge access cell sites to the aggregation and core networks. The LTE-ready network features the company's extensive carrier-class product portfolio across multiple physical configurations, frequency bands, microwave transmission technologies and native TDM/IP traffic mix, for mobile backhaul applications with any combination of 2G, 3G and LTE. The demonstration network consists of three edge access links aggregated via a hub aggregation node and then backhauled to one high capacity TDM/IP core aggregation node.

"We understand the issues mobile operators are facing as they try to cope with ever-increasing subscriber demand for data against flat subscriber revenue," said Amir Zoufonoun, president and CEO of Exalt Communications. "Success will depend on building out a network at a lower cost per bit that can support high bandwidth from edge to core, with pay-as-you-grow functionality and easier migration from TDM to IP. Our live demo is a microcosm of the very networks mobile operators are trying to implement, and we welcome the opportunity to share our approach in our booth at CTIA."

The live demonstration features end-to-end connectivity for Ethernet, including 64-byte packet performance, DS3 and T1 across the entire network over a common, managed microwave communications infrastructure, as well as migration from TDM to full IP/Ethernet by re-allocating capacity from TDM circuits to Ethernet. Migration can occur on the mobile operator's schedule and in the sections of the network where it is most required.

Edge Access Cell Sites
At the edge, Exalt will feature the latest ExtendAir™ zero-footprint microwave backhaul radios, supporting native TDM and native Ethernet, in 18 GHz FDD and 5 GHz CarrierTDD™ for CDMA/GSM/3G or 4G/LTE base station interconnection, and providing 100 Mbps of full-duplex capacity and up to 4xT1/E1/. The edge demonstration will also feature an Exalt 6 GHz Gigabit Ethernet system to demonstrate how a full DS3 can be transported with 140Mbps of full-duplex Ethernet capacity and additional T1s over a long haul, high power link. This link will also feature Exalt's unique 1.5+0 semi-protection for remote edge access locations.

Aggregated TDM and Ethernet Capacity
The hub aggregation node interconnects all native Ethernet and native TDM traffic from the edge access links and any traffic from cellular base stations at the aggregation node itself into a high capacity, aggregated backhaul interconnection to the MSC/POP. Exalt split-mount Gigabit Ethernet systems provide a direct connection for all Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet layer 2, DS3 and T1 traffic from the edge access sites without the need for an external layer 2 switch or TDM cross-connection devices.

At the Core
The core backhaul interconnects the aggregation hub to a core aggregation node via a multi-band Gigabit Ethernet aggregated link with over 500 Mbps full-duplex Ethernet (non-compressed, layer 2, 1536-byte packets) and nearly 700 Mbps full-duplex at layer 1 (64-byte packets). The same link carries 1xDS3 and 16xT1 TDM traffic as well, demonstrating that TDM legacy and 4G/LTE base station traffic can be delivered over the same high speed, high performance core backhaul infrastructure, thus keeping costs low and availability high.

To further boost capacity-handling capability, Exalt Gigabit Ethernet systems include built-in state-of-the art data compression technology designed to deliver up to 3x more throughput per carrier, depending on traffic profile. This results in link capacities of up to 1 Gbps full-duplex per single carrier (layer 1, 64-byte packets) and 4 Gbps in the maximum capacity aggregation configuration. To demonstrate enhanced availability, Exalt will showcase the use of errorless and jitterless adaptive modulation that can be deployed over hybrid TDM/Ethernet links to extend range, optimize availability by traffic type and adapt throughput to changing path conditions.

The Exalt Microwave Backhaul Product Portfolio
All Exalt microwave backhaul systems offer guaranteed link availability, guaranteed throughput and low, constant latency. Systems are available in world bands from 2 to 40 GHz and in capacities from 10 Mbps to more than 1000 Mbps per channel, providing a range of options to fit countless network applications. Designed to enable a smooth transition to IP, they offer native support for both TDM and Ethernet, and are fully software configurable and upgradeable. For easy and secure management using third-party network management systems, Exalt systems support SNMP v1, v2c and v3. Data security is provided by available FIPS 197-compliant AES 128-bit and 256-bit encryption that adds zero latency to the transmission. To simplify installation and maintenance, all Exalt systems feature an embedded manual and most include a built-in spectrum analyzer.
