May Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - June 8, 2011) - Residential construction in New Brunswick's urban centres was lower in May according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data(1) indicate that a total of 244 starts were recorded during the month compared to 359 starts for the same period in 2010.

"The decline in housing starts observed in May was part of an overall reduction in residential construction activity, as both single and multiple starts were down significantly in New Brunswick's urban centres," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. Single starts were down 42 per cent in May, with a total of 112 units compared to 192 during the same month last year. Year-to-date, single starts have declined 35 per cent to 251 units.

In May, multiple starts were down 21 per cent for a monthly total of 132 units. Year-to date, multiple starts were down 47 per cent from last year's total of 444 units to 235 starts. "Apartment starts have remained relatively weak to the end of May, contributing to the overall decline in new home construction activity observed in the province," added Gautreau.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in May were down seven per cent to 15,025 units compared to last year's total of 16,178. Single-detached starts were down 23 per cent to 6,005 units, while multiple starts were up seven per cent to 9,020 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 848 new units were started in May 2011 compared to 1,137 units during the same period in 2010.
