May Housing Starts in Halifax


HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - June 8, 2011) - New residential construction in Halifax decreased last month compared to May 2010 according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There were 233 housing starts last month, compared to 303 recorded in May of 2010.

"New home construction in Halifax decreased in May compared to last year," said Matthew Gilmore, senior market analyst with CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre. "In spite of a relatively strong month for multiple starts, this segment was 35% below the level recorded last year," Gilmore said. "The single detached segment of the market strengthened in May with nearly nine per cent growth," Gilmore added.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in May were down seven per cent to 15,025 units compared to last year's total of 16,178. Single-detached starts declined 23 per cent to 6,005 units, while multiple starts increased seven per cent to 9,020 units in 2011. In the Atlantic region, 848 new units were started in May 2011 compared to 1,137 units during the same period in 2010.
