Microsemi Takes 30 Watt Power-over-Ethernet Technology Outdoors

Introduces First IEEE802.3at-Compliant Gigabit Midspan for Outdoor Installations

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Sept. 7, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor solutions differentiated by power, security, reliability and performance, today announced the industry's first Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) midspan that delivers up to 30 Watts (W) of power at up to 1 gigabit-per-second (1Gbps) data rates, over standard Ethernet cabling, to outdoor devices including IP surveillance cameras and wireless LAN access points.

"Microsemi continues to focus on enhancing PoE technology to solve difficult challenges facing users in a growing variety of market applications," said Paul Pickle, senior vice president of Microsemi's Integrated Circuit Group. "We have now combined our proven surge-protection technology with an outdoor-rated enclosure to offer a complete, safe, end-to-end solution for high-power outdoor PoE installations."

The PowerDsine® PD-9001GO PoE midspan supports the IEEE802.3at high-power standard at 10/100/1000Mbps data rates, and is backward-compatible with the earlier low-power IEEE802.3af standard. The units feature plug-and-play installation and also include integrated surge protection for both the alternating current (AC) and PoE ports. This eliminates the need for costly companion surge protection units to prevent direct or nearby lightning strikes from damaging or destroying both the powered devices (PDs) and their network switch.

"The single-port PowerDsine PD-9001GO midspan solves the power-deployment problem in outdoor locations where an electrical outlet is typically not available and equipment must be able to withstand lightning and extreme temperature and humidity conditions," said Sani Ronen, senior product line manager for Microsemi's PowerDsine Midspans. "These PowerDsine midspans provide a cost-effective solution for outdoor mesh wireless LAN access points that were previously difficult to power. They also are ideal for the fast-growing IP surveillance market, where they can be used to power security cameras that stream data back to the network over a wireless link from hard-to-reach outdoor locations."

Key Features

  • Housing is rated to International Protection 66 (IP66) standards, enabling outdoor placement
  • Extended temperature range (-40oC , +65oC)
  • Fully IEEE802.3at-compliant
  • Supports 10/100/1000Mbps data rates
  • Plug-and-Play installation (installer does not have to open the unit)
  • Supports both 802.3af and 802.3at PDs
  • Integrated surge protection, including compliance with GR-1089 standard for lightning protection

Microsemi's PowerDsine PoE midspans are designed to power network devices such as Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) and dome network cameras, WLAN access points, access control systems, thin clients and other Ethernet end terminals over standard Ethernet cables, without requiring any changes to the existing network infrastructure. The company's PowerDsine midspan family includes units that deliver up to 60W of safe, uninterrupted power over all four pairs of a single CAT5 cable. Additionally, the industry's move to the HDBaseT technology standard, when ratified, will enable certified Microsemi PoE midspans to deliver up to 100W of power to devices throughout a home or business.
