September Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Oct. 11, 2011) - Residential construction in New Brunswick's urban centres was up in September according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data1 indicate that a total of 348 starts were recorded during the month compared to 153 starts for the same period in 2010.

"In New Brunswick, significant gains in apartment starts in both Fredericton and Moncton were responsible for the rise in residential housing starts in the month of September," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. In September, 235 multiple starts were recorded compared to 44 units for the same month last year. Year-to date, multiple starts are down 15 per cent from last year's total to 1,051 units.

Single starts in September were comparable to last year's total, with a four per cent increase to 113 units. Year-to-date, single starts have declined 20 per cent to 800 units.
"Despite the strong performance in September, the new home market in New Brunswick continues to trail last year's pace after the first three quarters of the year, with notable declines in both single and multiple starts," added Gautreau.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in September were up 14 per cent to 16,490 units compared to last year's total of 14,402. Single-detached starts were up five per cent to 6,262 units, while multiple starts were up 21 per cent to 10,228 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 1,094 new units were started in September 2011 compared to 720 units during the same period in 2010.
