Recon Instruments Partners With SMTC to Build World's First GPS and Micro Optics Displays for Alpine Goggles

SMTC to Utilize Package-on-Package Technology at Mexico Facility

TORONTO, Nov. 2, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- SMTC Corporation (Nasdaq:SMTX) (TSX:SMX) ("SMTC"), a global electronics manufacturing services provider, announced today that they have successfully been awarded a new manufacturing contract with Recon Instruments to manufacture the world's first GPS and sensor-enabled Micro Optics Displays for alpine goggles.

Recon Instruments is a technology company that specializes in developing location-and-sensor-based products, such as alpine goggles, that focus on providing direct-to-eye communication of live performance statistics. Recon Instruments' Micro Optic Displays ("MOD") provides real-time information on speed, jump airtime, GPS location, distance travelled, temperature, and altitude, while also boasting a run counter and chrono/tracker feature. MOD Live includes all the features of MOD but possesses additional functions utilizing its Android operating system and Bluetooth capabilities. The Bluetooth capabilities will enable MOD Live to connect wirelessly to Smartphones, allowing access to music playlists, text messages and caller ID. MOD Live will also connect wirelessly to select upcoming wireless video cameras, converting the micro-LCD screen into a real-time viewfinder.

Through this new agreement, SMTC will provide Recon with a range of manufacturing and service solutions from their Chihuahua, Mexico facility in order to support the launch of Recon's new MOD and MOD Live products. These services include value engineering, new product introduction (NPI) support, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), module manufacturing and global supply chain support.

SMTC will utilize industry leading Package-on-Package (PoP) manufacturing process technology, which supports the small form factor and ruggedness requirements of the Recon product. This integrated circuit packaging technique provides technical benefits such as faster communication between CPU and memory, reduced design complexity and improved overall PCB footprint.

"The level of engineering expertise and manufacturing capabilities, combined with the service flexibility offered to us by SMTC, represents real value for Recon," said Dan Eisenhardt, President and CEO of Recon Instruments.

"Recon is a truly innovative company, and we are very excited to be partnering with them in manufacturing this product," said Catherine Copplestone, Vice President and General Manager of SMTC Mexico. "We look forward to supporting and growing Recon's product line through our Mexican facility."

"Since we established ourselves in Mexico back in 2000, our Chihuahua site has evolved into providing significant breadth of service for OEMs addressing a growing set of technological, supply chain and logistics complexities," added Paul Blom, Executive Vice President of Operations for SMTC.
