Global Soap Project Finds Support at Boston Copley Square Hotel

Hotel Efforts Help Create Positive Impact on Worldwide Health and Well-Being

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Dec 12, 2012) -  Joining forces with a global charity organization to help fight deaths from unsanitary conditions, one of the premier hotels near Boston Back Bay, is recycling soap through the efforts of the Global Soap Project.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and concern of the Courtyard Boston Copley Square hotel's dedicated associates, the Courtyard is helping to decrease the number of children around the world who die from hygiene and sanitation related illnesses by recycling its used soap. In supporting the Global Soap Project, the hotel is able to share in helping communities around the world receive much needed soap and proper hygiene education to improve global health. Working with existing organizations within the communities, the Global Soap Project is able to ensure the soap is distributed to those in need and that educational programs are in place. With an estimated 2.4 million children dying each year from illnesses related to poor hygiene and sanitation, supporting this global relief program is an important step in creating a positive impact on the health and well-being of some of the most vulnerable populations in the world.

The housekeeping team of the Courtyard Boston Copley Square collected over 90 pounds of soap in November alone for shipment to the Global Soap Project's warehouse in Georgia, where it is sorted, softened and filtered before being molded into hand-cut finished bars for curing, inspection and packaging. Much of the warehouse work is done by volunteers, and upon passing third-party laboratory testing the soap is shipped to locations such as Sierra Leone and Haiti where it is helping to fight cholera epidemics, and is distributed through the Salesian Missions Schools in Haiti as part of the school's ongoing hygiene education program. The charity also ships soap to the Dominican Republic where it is a vital part of the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) program in schools, and Malawi where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention use it in Water Hygiene Kits provided to pregnant women as part of ongoing prenatal clinics.

This Back Bay Boston boutique hotel's recycling of partially used bars of soap not only assists in supporting these vital programs, but when joined with other hotels across the country, helps to divert tons of waste from landfills and boosts environmental sustainability. The program is also responsible for increasing the awareness of hotel managers, housekeepers and guests to worldwide needs.
