Battelle, Sellex Liquid Bottle Scanner Approved for Use in Europe

The LS10 Detects Liquid Threats, Could Ease Air Travel

COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwire - Dec 12, 2012) - Battelle and its marketing partner Sellex International passed a significant milestone in steps to improve security with major European approval of a cutting-edge scanner.

The European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) recently granted Battelle and Sellex final approval -- Type B Standard 2 Certification -- for the LS10 liquid bottle scanner, a powerful screening technology that quickly and accurately scans liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in almost any container for threats such as explosives, with low false alarm rates. Designed, produced and marketed by Battelle and Sellex, the LS10 also is a candidate for similar approvals in America.

"We already have had interest from all across Europe for trials of the LS10," said Mark Davis, Business Development Manager at Battelle. "We are very excited to have achieved this critical milestone and are poised to supply these bottle scanners at security checkpoints throughout European airports, government buildings and other passenger hubs."

The innovative technology received one of the coveted R&D 100 Awards from R&D Magazine, which bestows the awards in recognition of the most significant scientific accomplishments for 2011. The LS10 is one of the most advanced bottle liquid scanners in the world, employing dual sensing modalities to detect threat flammables, acids, and explosive liquids, aerosols and gels within sealed or unopened glass, plastic, metal, paper, and ceramic containers whether clear or opaque.

This leading edge scanning device integrates the use of Radio Frequency (RF) and ultrasonic technology to non-invasively interrogate liquids, aerosols and gels in containers. The LS10 distinguishes threat liquids, aerosols and gels from benign substances, and alerts security personnel of suspicious contents quickly and accurately. Ease of operation of the LS10 allows for its use in varied security venues. For security check points, this new technology enables more efficient processing of LAGs with high detection success and low false alarm rates.
