Electronic Arts Inc. Tracks Video Game Builds With the Nuxeo Content Management Platform

Accelerates Time to Deployment of a Business-Critical Solution by Nearly 50%

NEW YORK, NY and PARIS--(Marketwire - Feb 19, 2013) - Nuxeo, the provider of a content management platform for business applications, said that Electronic Arts, the global leader in digital interactive entertainment, is using the Nuxeo Platform to track all of their video game builds, which are their core business assets, throughout the development lifecycle.

The Release and Preservation Management (RPM) Department at EA is responsible for the video game builds made by around 70 active game development teams. A team working on a single game may generate 1.2 TB worth of builds in a year, and each build must be transferred to a separate physical location for testing and localization. There are 22 physical sites around the world, so transferring this type of content across the internal network would be too resource-intensive.

When the custom-built internal application to track game builds became outdated, the RPM group decided to develop a new application. They explored all types of content management and asset management solutions, from SharePoint and Oracle to open source to build your own from scratch. They chose the Nuxeo Platform as a foundation because it was flexible enough to meet their application development requirements and customizable by design.

"The Nuxeo Platform enabled us to build an application to manage video game builds in 7 months vs. an estimated 12-13 months for a solution developed in-house," stated Steve Scivally, Technical Director, Release and Preservation Management at EA. "We accelerated our time to deployment by nearly 50%, and we now have a sustainable solution for tracking our content."

The application was named Shift, because the goal is to simplify shifting content around EA. By managing game build accessibility rather than physical storage, Shift offers an efficient, scalable solution. Shift is centered around a custom content model in the Nuxeo Platform. They are using the concept of a document to hold metadata about game content and a reference to the game builds location.

When a user makes a request for a game build, they are, in fact, accessing a form that calls the content item that represents that particular game. That request triggers a workflow that updates the content lifecycle state, verifies user permission to access the build, and then delivers the game build on the requested disc media.

"EA's business assets -- their video game builds -- are distributed around the world," said Eric Barroca, Nuxeo CEO. "Like many types of enterprise applications, the fundamental requirement boils down to tracking and managing content, which means video game builds in this case, but it can be any type of asset. By using the Nuxeo content management platform to build context-specific business applications, architects and developers accelerate the development process and gain peace of mind with reliable, sustainable technology."

The system is currently in production for consumption by the development teams, certification and release management teams, QA and testing teams. It provides efficient, trackable access to a global library for all builds, replacing a deprecated system that did not scale to meet new business requirements effectively.
