Entropic, Telepath Deliver First AVS+ High Definition Set-Top Box Platform for China Satellite, Cable/IP and Terrestrial Markets

Entropic's EN7100, Coupled With Telepath's Market-Leading Integrated Circuit Solutions Deliver Unparalleled Performance and Security Features for Next-Generation Set-Top Box Devices

BEIJING (China Content Broadcasting Network Exhibition – Hall: 3; Booth # 3403), March 21, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, and Telepath Technologies Co., Ltd., a fabless integrated circuit (IC) solution provider in the multimedia broadcasting market, announced today the first Audio Video Coding Standard (AVS+) High Definition (HD) set-top box (STB) platform for China Satellite, Cable/IP and Terrestrial marketsThe platform, integrated with the latest STB system-on-a-chip (SoC) from Entropic, offers a high performance, cost-optimized solution that supports AVS-P16 (AVS+) and includes advanced security components to ensure enhanced TV viewing experiences.

AVS is a leading video compression standard in China and performs comparably to contemporary standards, such as Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and H.264, a variation of the MPEG-4 standard noted for its high quality and high efficiency. An HD format video compression solution, AVS+ raises the bar for China's video coding standards and is a key future requirement for set-top box solutions addressing the China Direct-to-Home (DTH) market.

Entropic is the first semiconductor company to provide an AVS+-supported product, with its latest SoC, the EN7100. The EN7100 uses a single-core ARM® Cortex™- A9 processor with up to 2500 DMIPS, a 2D graphics engine and advanced security features; capable of vast computation and video processing capabilities. Further, it provides unprecedented price performance, delivers up to 1GHz operation in an "LP" low-power process node for low power consumption and offers a DVB-C (Digital Video Broadcast - Cable) demodulator inside to seamlessly address the growing digital cable television market in China.

Telepath provides a high performance low power ABS-S demodulator to enable the deployment of China DTH. The latest SoC, TP5001, is based on 55nm advanced process. It provides the most stable receiving capability to meet the requirement of remote area application.

"By delivering the first STB SoC solution that supports AVS+ worldwide, we can offer the most complete solution with enhanced video decoding, performance and technical and ecosystem support," said Patrick Henry, president and CEO, Entropic. "In working with Telepath, we are ahead of our competition in delivering solutions to the market that leverage the power, functionality and flexibility required to enable China's leading Satellite, Cable/IP and Terrestrial service providers to optimize their set-top box coding efficiency while lowering computational complexity."

"Combined with Entropic's latest EN7100 SoC, we can enable a new generation of set-top box platforms that take advantage of the latest technologies in advanced video decoding and processing," said Hongjun Wang, general manager, Telepath. "Entropic's SoC solution is a high performance, low power consumption solution that when combined with our next-generation ICs, yield set-top box platforms that are ideal for the China broadcasting market."

Availability

The Entropic/Telepath solution is currently available to early access customers and partners with Entropic's EN7100 family of STB SoCs in full product production in 2H of 2013.
