U.S. Security Associates Observes Earth Day 365 Days a Year

ATLANTA, April 22, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On April 22nd, U.S. Security Associates (USA) joins more than one billion participants in celebrating Earth Day, the largest civic observance in the world. Like a growing number of businesses, schools, communities and individuals committed to "going green" not just on Earth Day but every day, USA and its 46,000 employees are adding their acts of green to the swelling numbers registered under Earth Day Network's A Billion Acts of Green® campaign. A Billion Acts of Green® was launched in 2010 as an international movement to protect the planet and secure a sustainable future, making it a natural extension of USA's work as one of the world's largest security companies.

Contract security services employees are often the first line of defense in potentially hazardous situations such as leaks and spills, fires, mechanical equipment failures, and other events that may endanger the environment. "As Earth Day approaches," says USA President and CEO Chuck Schneider, "We want to recognize what our people are doing, both professionally and personally, to protect the world around us. Every day at thousands of client sites, USA security officers diligently observe and report their surroundings and provide effective, trained response. In so doing, they contain countless environmental risks and avert untold disasters and catastrophes."

Under Schneider's leadership, protecting the environment is USA company policy. USA's corporate office is located in an Energy Star building, and prime parking is available for those who carpool. Company culture dictates printing only if necessary; USA manuals, policies, and training are all available online. The company is reducing its carbon footprint by transitioning its patrol fleet to smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles or durable hybrid electric cars. Where site conditions permit periodic charging, USA uses electric-only patrol vehicles that eliminate the need for gasoline. Where appropriate, USA recommends alternative security solutions like bicycles, Segways, or T3 electric standup vehicles (ESVs), zero gas emission, clean energy vehicles that are good for the budget and the environment.

As Schneider aligns corporate policy with environmental responsibility, he acknowledges the contributions, large and small, of employees throughout the company. "At USA headquarters, in branch offices, and in their personal lives, our employees are making choices that reflect the spirit of Earth Day and serve as inspiration to us all."

If employees in one branch office choose to forego Styrofoam cups and keeps ceramic mugs in the breakroom, how much landfill pileup could be reduced if the practice spread across nearly 150 branch offices? If one branch office donates 60 pounds of used paper to a local church every two weeks, and the church recycles that paper for income, how much discarded paper could all the branch offices donate, and what could be done with the proceeds from recycling it all? If one branch office recycles retired uniforms through a local homeless outreach center, how many citizens in need could be helped if every branch office followed suit? If one employee in her personal time teaches elementary school children to plant trees, how many seeds could be planted for the future? USA applauds every act of green. As the Earth Day Network says, "Together, these actions add up to something big."
