REGINA, Canada, June 26, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Since 2000, the IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project has been a world leader conducting research into, and the deployment of, effective and safe measurement and monitoring technologies for the geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2). The research project, managed by the Petroleum Technology Research Centre, has examined the storage of nearly 25 million tonnes of CO2 into two oil reservoirs in southeastern Saskatchewan, including research that is essential for other CO2 storage projects planned worldwide.

Best Practices for Validating CO2 Geological Storage: Observations and Guidance from the IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project, is now available from Geoscience Publishing, and offers guidance in most key areas of storage projects based on Weyburn-Midale findings. These include: 

  • Characterizing the site, to make sure it is safe for long term geological storage.
  • Predicting the movement and storage of the CO2 in reservoirs.
  • Monitoring of groundwater and soils above the site to assure CO2 has stayed deep underground.
  • Using four dimensional seismic monitoring, and downhole monitoring methods, to verify where the CO2 is in the reservoirs.
  • Examining wellbores to assure they remain safe and secure.
  • Examining potential risks from CO2 storage to demonstrate the safe nature of the project.
  • Conducting public outreach and education in the local communities and across Canada to explain the project and why CO2 storage is important.

In June of this year, a companion scientific publication – a special issue of the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control: The IEAGHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project – was published by Elsevier periodicals. This expansive collection of research papers provides detailed technological information and data from the project.
