Rovi Celebrates 1 Billion DivX Device Milestone at IBC

Showcases New Generation of DivX Video Technologies Driving Advanced HEVC and 4K-Enabled Multi-Screen Content Services

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 12, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IBC -- Rovi Corporation (Nasdaq:ROVI), driving digital entertainment innovation, today announced the company has achieved a significant industry milestone with 1 Billion DivX® devices shipped worldwide. Representing multiple major consumer electronics brands and over 30,000 unique models, DivX supported devices include everything from digital TVs and set-top boxes to smartphones and tablets. Importantly, this vast device footprint helped produce an entertainment ecosystem that gives consumers an extremely flexible and high quality video experience, while offering service providers a turnkey solution to securely deliver entertainment to a massive audience.

"This amazing achievement was only possible with the continued support of leading consumer electronics manufacturers, service providers, and a passionate audience of consumers. Together, we helped pioneer advanced multi-screen video entertainment," said Bob Shallow, SVP, product sales & marketing at Rovi. "We are now focusing our broad range of new and existing DivX video technologies and long-standing device certification program on accelerating HEVC adoption, as exemplified by our demonstrations and announcements at IBC."

At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Rovi announced an end-to-end High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265) development program designed to enable companies participating in the digital video value chain to take advantage of the latest compression standard to reduce storage and bandwidth costs, and deliver an optimized high quality viewing experience. Highlighting the significant progress Rovi has made since CES, the company is demonstrating at IBC a range of new products and updates that incorporate the new compression standard, and hosting live demonstrations of HEVC solutions in collaboration with other industry leaders.

Introduced at IFA and offered as a free download for Windows and Mac, DivX 10 is an innovative consumer software application that allows consumers to easily convert videos to the new DivX HEVC-based format. With built-in support for MPEG-4, H.264 and now HEVC video, DivX 10 enables consumers to easily convert videos to HEVC for playback across multiple screens, including personal computers, consumer electronics and mobile devices.

Released in June, the MainConcept® HEVC SDK was one of the first broadly available solutions for streamlining the integration of H.265 into video applications and services in multiple environments. As well as working to continue to improve HEVC format quality and bitrate savings, the SDK v1.1 update adds real-time 4K decoding and support for HM 11 anchor streams. These enhancements are designed to increase the ease with which high-quality video content is delivered through existing cable, Internet and wireless channels, as well as dramatically reducing content conversion times.

Other HEVC related demonstrations at IBC include DivX Plus Streaming, Rovi's adaptive streaming solution, which is being used to showcase the delivery of protected HEVC content to mobile devices. DivX Plus Streaming has been adopted by services around the globe to add advanced features, such as 5.1-channel surround sound, multi-language subtitles and audio tracks, to IP-delivered entertainment and is also part of a new generation of DivX solutions helping add to the 1 billion DivX device ecosystem.

As well as viewing Rovi's end-to-end solution for HEVC, visitors to IBC can see live demonstrations of Rovi's other solutions driving the advanced discovery and monetization of digital entertainment at Stand 5.A31, September 13-17, in Amsterdam. For an overview of Rovi activities during IBC and to access the latest show announcements, visit Rovi's online press kit at http://www.rovicorp.com/dm/rovi-at-ibc2013.htm.

Expected to have a significant impact on video distribution and consumption, HEVC is designed to offer almost double the compression efficiency of H.264 and therefore reduce storage and bandwidth costs, as well as support higher resolutions such as 4K.
