Significant Role for Mainframe in Big Data and Cloud Initiatives

Mainframe's Status as 'Long-Life Computing Solution' Continues to Attract New
Workloads

High Availability and Security Fuel Mainframe Investments

SAN JOSE, Calif., 2013-09-25 20:02 CEST (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --
With terms like Cloud, Big Data and The Internet of Things at the forefront of
IT conversation, many might think that the mainframe is a historical artifact.
But as BMC Software -- the global leader in IT management solutions -- found in
its 8th annual Worldwide Survey of Mainframe Users, nothing could be further
from the truth.

BMC revealed the results of the survey today. The key takeaway is that the
mainframe will continue to play a critical role as a scalable platform
delivering crucial computing power in a world where business users expect
access anytime, anywhere, without regard to the data volume and velocity
required behind the scenes. IT experts throughout the United States, Europe and
Asia-Pacific reported that the mainframe is not only sticking around, it is
evolving to play an increasingly important role in today's enterprise IT
environments.

                               Key Points to Know

-- Among those surveyed, 93 percent see mainframe as a robust, long-term
     solution.
-- One-third of those planning a cloud implementation said mainframe data will
be accessed by their cloud applications.
-- Fifty percent agreed that mainframe will continue to attract new workloads.
-- 70 percent of respondents said the mainframe will have a key role in Big
     Data plans.
-- Keeping IT costs down remains the key concern. 85 percent of respondents
identified this as their top priority area.
-- 76 percent of large shops expect MIPS capacity to grow as they modernize
and add applications to address business needs. This highlights the need
for software that minimizes expensive MIPS consumption and exploits the
     mainframe's cost-efficient specialty engines.
-- No large shops -- and only 7 percent of all respondents -- have plans to
     eliminate their mainframe environment.
-- 46 percent of mainframe budgets are spent on software.
-- 66 percent said availability is a top priority, but 40 percent reported an
unplanned production outage in the past 12 months.
