Boyaca, Colombia Breaks Guinness World Record for Largest Coffee Party

TUNJA, COLOMBIA--(Marketwired - Oct 7, 2013) - With the support of the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC) and the Department of Boyacá, Colombia, 13,567 Colombian coffee drinkers, including over 400 coffee growers, gathered today to break the Guinness Record of the world's largest coffee party. This record was previously held by Krüger GmbH & Co. KG (Germany) at the Jugendpark in Cologne, Germany, on 30 August 2009 with 8,162 participants.

The 2013 largest coffee gathering kicked off at 11 a.m. at the Plaza Bolivar in Tunja, Colombia where attendees were welcomed with a cup of Colombian Coffee grown in the Boyacá region. They were then sectioned off in different parts of the Plaza to be counted and a giant screen displayed the number of people recorded.

"It was a true honor to have such a big number of attendees gathered in one place representing the Colombian coffee culture," said Luis F. Samper, Chief Communications and Marketing Officer of the FNC. "Breaking this record means the world to Colombian coffee farmers as we look to promote and encourage Colombian coffee consumption, and which better place to break the record than in Boyacá, Colombia, one of the 21 departments known for the production of export quality coffee."

Professor Yarumo, celebrated agricultural figure and coffee expert representing over 1,500 FNC agronomists, as well as iconic Colombian coffee character, Juan Valdez, were also present to witness this never-before seen coffee drinking gathering that continues to put Colombia on the map as the coffee capital of the world.

"Everyone seemed to enjoy their time at Plaza Bolivar and we can't find enough words to describe how thankful we are to have had everyone be a part of this significant event and support the 12 thousand coffee producers from our department," said Juan Carlos Granados, Governor of Boyacá.
