Ernesto Zedillo to Chair 21st Century Council of Berggruen Institute on Governance

BEIJING, Oct. 31, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Zedillo Ponce de León will be the new chair of the 21st Century Council as part of a deeper partnership between the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization (YCSG), of which he is the director, and the Berggruen Institute on Governance (BIG).

BIG's 21st Century Council is a forum for dialogue and action on global governance, emphasizing the G-20 as the governing body of globalization. Members include former heads of state, global entrepreneurs, and political thinkers. The group, which is currently in China meeting with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang as part of its "Understanding China" conference, includes members such as Nicolas Sarkozy, Zheng Bijian, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Amartya Sen, Eric Schmidt, and Arianna Huffington.

Both BIG and YCSG share the goal of identifying the challenges and opportunities inherent with globalization in the 21st century. Given the coherence in our respective missions, there exist many possibilities for meaningful collaboration.

Zedillo Ponce de León, who was President of Mexico from 1994 to 2000 and has been at Yale since 2002, has been a member of the 21st Century Council since it was first convened by the Berggruen Institute on Governance in 2011.

A list of the Council's participants and activities can be found at www.berggruen.org.
