Las Vegas Veterinarian Announces Feline Dental Awareness Month

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 28, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- All About Cats Veterinary Hospital in Las Vegas, NV is raising awareness about the dangers of dental health problems in cats in honor of National Pet Dental Health Month. The vet hospital is encouraging cat owners to proactively schedule dental check-ups for their cats. Dental disease is one of the leading causes of health concerns in cats, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society, which reports that 70% of cats show signs of dental disease by age three. Now through the end of March 2014, the vet hospital is offering $30 off all dental cleanings and complimentary Feline Greenies Dental Treats.

Las Vegas veterinarian Dr. Terri Koppe and her fellow feline veterinarians are raising awareness about the importance of regular dental checkups for feline health.

The American Veterinary Dental Society states that 70% of cats show signs of dental disease by the age of three, and 85% of all adult pets have periodontal disease.

"Most cats are suffering with their mouth pain in silence," said Dr. Koppe. "Cat owners simply do not realize the disease and pain that is hiding in their cat's mouth that may be affecting their cat's daily life."

Dental disease can also lead to many other health concerns if not taken seriously. The harmful bacteria in the cat's mouth can get into the bloodstream and have effects on the rest of the body, including the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys.

"Bacterial infections in the mouth can be very serious," said Dr. Koppe. "We commonly see urinary tract infections in cats that are thought to be secondary to the infection in the cat's mouth."

In order to encourage better feline dental care, Dr. Koppe is offering cat owners a special discount on dental cleanings for the month of January. Pet owners will receive $30 off all "dental cleaning and evaluation procedures" and a complimentary bag of Feline Greenies Dental Treats.

"We hope cat owners will take advantage of this special, limited time offer and bring their cats in for a dental checkup," said Dr. Koppe.

As part of the vet hospital's dental checkup, the cat veterinarians will examine the mouth, teeth and gums. The "dental cleaning and evaluation procedure" is performed under anesthesia and cats are able to go home the same day. Anesthesia allows the vet to thoroughly examine the teeth and gums, X-ray all the teeth, remove dental tartar and plaque using the ultrasonic scaler and then polish the cat's teeth.

Las Vegas veterinarian Dr. Terri Koppe founded All About Cats Veterinary Hospital in October of 2001. The vet hospital is an exclusive cats-only hospital dedicated to helping felines live healthy lives through medical, dental and surgical veterinary care.
