More Than 100 Employees Dress in Red and Create Giant Heart

COSTA MESA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The employees of Morgan Drexen Integrated Systems, a leading provider of software and support services to businesses nationwide, (http://www.morgandrexen.com) showed their support of American Heart Month by creating one of Southern California's largest human hearts on the top level of the company's parking structure.

The event took place on National Wear Red Day, February 7th. And was designed to raise awareness among the company's 225 employees that heart disease is the number one killer of women. Preparations for creating the heart out of more than 100 employees began a week in advance with emails about healthy heart awareness and reminders for employees to wear red.

"Heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. In this country, one-third of all deaths among women can be attributed to heart disease," said Morgan Drexen COO, Rita Augusta. "Every year we lose so many of our loved ones to this silent killer, and the only way to fight it is by making people aware of it."

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 1,100 women die from heart disease each day, a number that has been slowly dropping but remains far too high. The Association also reports that every year since 1984, more women have died from heart disease than men.

"Many of us know someone who has died from heart disease," said Joe Lizura, Vice President of Media at Morgan Drexen. "For me it was my mother. She never knew she had heart disease so she had no reason to suspect that any of her symptoms were those of a cardiovascular disease. It was a shock to our whole family when she suddenly died."

Now celebrating its 11th year, National Wear Red Day has become the hallmark of American Heart Month with companies, celebrities, families, and individuals participating, all with the goal of raising awareness of having a healthy heart.

"Our employees are wonderful people who have the unique ability to make events fun and often educational," said CEO, Walter Ledda. "Getting more than 100 people to wear red and get to the top of the parking deck to make one of the largest human hearts in Southern California was certainly both of those – and well worth it."

Morgan Drexen employees also had a special surprise waiting for them when they returned to the building. The International Christian Montessori Academy had secretly sent their student violinists over to the company in order to serenade the employees as they came back from the parking deck and into the lobby. "This was a wonderful surprise for everyone," said Walter Ledda. "Our returning employees were greeted with violin music being played by 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who quickly set up while we were on the top of the parking deck. Needless to say, we were all smiles when we heard their wonderful music."

Morgan Drexen plans to continue supporting American Heart Month for the next two weeks, culminating in a company blood drive on Friday February 28th.
