InterDigital Announces New Chief Technology Officer

Dr. Byung K. Yi Joins Company After Leadership Positions at FCC, LG Electronics

WILMINGTON, Del., April 29, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq:IDCC), a wireless research and development company, today announced that Dr. Byung K. Yi joins the company as chief technology officer and head of InterDigital Labs. In his new role, Dr. Yi will drive InterDigital's standards research and long-term research and development activities.

Dr. Yi joins InterDigital from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), where he was assistant division chief of engineering. Prior to his appointment at the FCC, Dr. Yi was Senior Executive Vice President at LG Electronics, where he headed the company's North American R&D center. A former member of InterDigital's Technology Advisory Committee, Dr. Yi contributes more than 30 years of advanced wireless development experience.

The addition of Dr. Yi is in the context of an expansion of efforts by InterDigital. James J. Nolan, who has previously led InterDigital Labs, will now lead InterDigital Solutions, the company's unit focused on taking advanced technologies towards commercialization via partnerships. Allen A. Proithis, formerly head of InterDigital Solutions, will assume leadership of a significant effort focused entirely on Internet of Things and machine-to-machine communications – the industry's most exciting growth area.

"Dr. Yi's decision to join our company and lead our research is a tremendous validation of the quality of research InterDigital is conducting, and speaks to the important role our company is playing in leading future technologies," said William J. Merritt, President and Chief Executive Officer of InterDigital. "By adding Dr. Yi to our existing team, we're strengthening our commitment to technology and diversifying into the areas that we think will define our future. This transition will result in strong leadership for both Labs and Solutions, and a significant commitment to what most view as the most exciting wireless opportunity going forward."

Dr. Yi also contributes a strong history of industry leadership. He has served on the board of directors or steering committees of a number of professional organizations, including the Telecommunication Industry Association, the Center for Wireless Communications, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 Technical Specification Group, and a number of others. He was awarded the prestigious CDG (CDMA Development Group) Industry Leadership award, been recognized by the National Engineer Week (NEW) Foundation, and inducted to the Hall of Fame by the School of Engineering and Applied Science of George Washington University.

Dr. Yi received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Yonsei University (Korea), his master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan, and his doctoral degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University.
