SAN JOSE, Calif., May 7, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With the spring home buying and moving season in full swing, Housing Trust Silicon Valley (HTSV) is supporting affordable housing initiatives in Silicon Valley during Santa Clara Affordable Housing Week. The Affordable Housing Policy Breakfast kicks off the week that is sponsored by Wells Fargo and takes place May 16-23. HTSV and SPUR, a nonprofit that promotes good planning and good government in the Bay Area, will be addressing ways to house a growing Silicon Valley workforce at the May 16 breakfast event.
The Policy Breakfast will take place at Microsoft's Sunnyvale campus located at 1020 Enterprise Way Tower B from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The event will feature workforce housing experts in an open forum discussion.
"We are hosting this Policy Breakfast with SPUR so we can discuss workable solutions to our affordable housing crisis, and to communicate directly with local and state governments, developers and private industry," said HTSV CEO Kevin Zwick. "There is simply not enough affordable housing in the Bay Area to accommodate low-income families. Housing is also a problem for moderate and even higher-income workers who are recruited by the most successful technology companies in the world as the demand of homes and apartment greatly exceeds the supply."
At HTSV's 2014 Investor Briefing on April 23, Zwick reported that there are currently 44,000 new jobs in Santa Clara County, but only 8,000 available homes. This equates to a shortage of 36,000 homes today, and could reach a projected 360,000 home deficit over ten years if the problem is not addressed now.

HTSV is also supporting Affordable Housing Week by participating in an affordable housing interview on KLIV May 16 at 7 p.m. HTSV's Zwick will join Neighborhood Housing Services Silicon Valley Executive Director Matt Huerta and Joint Venture Silicon Valley President and CEO Russell Hancock in a panel-style discussion. Additionally, members of HTSV, the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors (SCCAOR) and the City of San Jose are coming together for the SCCAOR Volunteer Home Beautification, taking place May 18. Volunteers will be doing repair work and landscaping upgrades for a home in San Jose's Department of Housing Rehab initiative.
