Northrop Grumman Wins NIH Bioinformatics Resource Center Virus Contract to Support NIH in the Research, Control and Elimination of Pathogens

ROCKVILLE, Md. – Nov. 6, 2014 – The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has selected Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) to head a team for the Bioinformatics Resource Centers for Infectious Diseases (BRC) contract. The contract is worth $4.9 million for the first year and will run through September 2019 with a total potential value of approximately $27 million. The award is a follow-on to the Virus Pathogen Resource (ViPR)/Influenza Research Database (IRD) BRC contract.

Northrop Grumman will continue to maintain and enhance the NIAID Bioinformatics Resource Center Virus websites as data repositories for genomic, proteomic and other data associated with pathogenic viruses such as influenza, Ebola, West Nile, severe acute respiratory syndrome and Middle East respiratory syndrome, enterovirus, pox, dengue and hepatitis. Additionally they will support an integrated analytics platform and tools to facilitate research into the control and elimination of these pathogens.

The Northrop Grumman-J. Craig Venter Institute-Vecna Technologies, Inc. team has managed the NIAID Virus BRC websites for the past five years, developing an integrated bioinformatics platform to facilitate development of vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics for pathogenic viruses with special emphasis on influenza. The core team will be supported by six eminent scientists from the university research community as co-investigators. This project is fully funded with federal funds from the NIAID, National Institutes of Health and Department of Health and Human Services under Contract No. HHSN272201400028C.
