Increased Demand for Ultrasound Guidance Devices Expected to Drive the U.S. Vascular Access Device Market to Over $5 billion by 2020

The U.S. ultrasound vascular access device market is expected to experience double digit growth by 2020, reports iData Research.

VANCOUVER, BC, Nov. 20, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - According to a new report by iData Research http://www.idataresearch.com, the leading global authority in medical device market research, the U.S. vascular access market is expected to grow to $5 billion by 2020. Growth is fueled by the increased efforts to reduce catheter related infections, driving the demand for products such as ultrasound-assisted placement devices.

Ultrasound guidance has been shown in numerous studies to significantly decrease the rate of failed catheter insertions. The Femoral Arterial Access with Ultrasound Trial (FAUST) demonstrated that using ultrasound led to a reduction in the attempts to cannulate the femoral artery to nearly one third of the attempts without ultrasound. Moreover, the success rate for central line placement with ultrasound guidance is over 95%, compared with 60% to 80% for central lines using the landmark technique. Ultrasound guidance is already being used for 70% of PICC placement procedures, with a continued increase expected over the forecast period. In many facilities fully equipped with ultrasound systems, ultrasound guidance is used in nearly 100% of central catheter placements.

"Vascular access ultrasound guidance procedures do not require the same level of visualization detail as many cardiology procedures," states Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData Research. Most non-OB/GYN ultrasound systems with a vascular transducer are capable of guiding catheter insertion. Some of the other systems that are used for guiding catheter insertions include General Electric's (GE) LOGIQ® series, Philips's HD11XE® and SONOS® series and SonoSite's NanoMaxx™, MicroMaxx™, M-Turbo™ S series and TITAN®, among others.

Becton Dickinson, holds the largest share of the U.S. vascular access device market despite competing in only two segments, PIVC and syringe & needle. Becton Dickinson has also been expanding their presence in emerging markets such as China and India through the development of local manufacturing plants. Other notable competitors in this market include C.R. Bard, Covidien, Teleflex Medical, Johnson & Johnson and Smith & Nephew.
