VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Dec. 5, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hampton Roads Bankshares, Inc. (Nasdaq:HMPR) (the "Company"), the holding company for The Bank of Hampton Roads ("BHR") and Shore Bank, today announced that it has reached a settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ("SEC") regarding the SEC's investigation of the Company's accounting treatment of its deferred tax asset ("DTA") and allowance for loan losses in 2009 and 2010. Under the settlement between the Company and the SEC, the Company has consented to the terms of an administrative cease-and-desist order relating solely to the DTA without admitting or denying the SEC's findings and has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $200,000. The investigation resolved today was originally disclosed in November, 2010 and the accounting at issue was corrected in August, 2010, prior to the Company's recapitalization and senior management transition.

"We are pleased to have fully resolved this legacy matter with the SEC so that we can continue to position the Company for growth and increased profitability," said Douglas J. Glenn, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company and Chief Executive Officer of BHR.
