Photo Release -- President Obama Recognizes NC SECU for Providing Free FICO(R) Scores to Borrowers

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 15, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- President Barack Obama outlined measures this week for taking further steps to safeguard Americans' financial security and fight identity theft. Within his message, the President recognized North Carolina State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) for its efforts in providing over 800,000 of its consumer loan members with one of the best monitoring tools to help spot identity theft – free access to their FICO® Scores. The Credit Union was among a handful of financial institutions the President acknowledged in a speech he delivered to the Federal Trade Commission on Monday. President Obama's message highlighted measures he will discuss in his January 20th State of the Union address and unveiled the next steps in his comprehensive approach to enhancing consumers' security, tackling identity theft, and improving privacy online and in the classroom.

Details released by the White House Office of the Press Secretary prior to his speech included President Obama's proposal to give consumers access to one of the best early indicators of identity theft, as well as an opportunity to improve their financial health by widening the community of companies that can make available free credit scores to our nation's loan consumers. Understanding the importance for consumers to know their credit score and how it can impact their financial well-being, State Employees' Credit Union partnered with Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO) in 2014 to provide active SECU borrowers with free access to their FICO Scores through the secure Member Access section of its website, www.ncsecu.org.

Mark Kretzschmar, Senior Vice President of SECU Loan Servicing, was part of the team that led the Credit Union in its credit score initiative. "As a member-owned cooperative that strongly advocates for its members and their financial health, SECU wholeheartedly supports President Obama's efforts to highlight the beneficial aspects of providing credit scores to consumers."
