Customized Joint Implants Popular Among Orthopedic Surgeons: Clinical Efficacy Important Internationally

VANCOUVER, BC, Feb. 11, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - According to a new extensive survey of hundreds of physicians that was conducted by iData Research (http://www.idataresearch.com), nearly half of surveyed orthopedic surgeons who attended the AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) Conference see a benefit to using custom joint implants.

Survey results demonstrate the growing demand for patient-specific implants among physicians. Provided that other factors are favorable, such as pricing, economics, and availability, this demand will help facilitate growth of the market for custom implant instrumentation and cutting blocks. The remainder of survey respondents were split between those who do not see a benefit to using customized implants, and those who had no opinion on the topic.

Underlying Reasons for Orthopedic Surgeon Preferences

Many surgeons gave unique feedback as to why, or why not, they choose to employ custom implants. The option to provide better implant fit and individualization for anatomical differences ranked highly. However, ease-of-use for custom implants was not a prevalent reason.

Surgeons who attended the AAOS conference were strongly motivated to provide the best clinical efficacy possibly for patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. That said, stock implants, those without the same tailoring possibilities as with custom implants, are often adequate for many surgeons. A diverse range of stock implant options are available on the market.

Internationally, orthopedic surgeons show a strong focus on procedure results, instead of on factors like cost reduction. If another product was able to demonstrate better clinical efficacy in comparison to the current product in use, many surgeons indicated that they would switch products. This trend was present from respondents across all geographical regions and clinical settings.
