KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 18, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The State of Washington Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) has selected leading health IT supplier Cerner Corp. to modernize integrated revenue cycle and electronic health records (EHRs) in multiple state facilities to prepare for ICD-10 compliance. The agreement will digitize DSHS' paper health records to improve provider access to patient information among facilities and provide tools to support DSHS' objective to improve patient safety.
"Implementing the EHR system will enable providers to give the best possible care to our patients through easily accessible, up-to-date patient information based on best clinical practices across our state hospitals," said Victoria Roberts, deputy assistant secretary, DSHS.
In addition to improved access to information, DSHS will implement computerized physician order entry (CPOE) as part of its focus on patient safety. A 2014 report in Perspectives in Health Information Managements states CPOE adoption can facilitate the reduction of medical errors as well as create cost savings in hospitals.
Cerner will implement Millennium PowerChart® and the revenue cycle suite of solutions at three accredited psychiatric hospitals, including Western State Hospital, Eastern State Hospital and Child Studies and Treatment Center. Cerner will replace the billing functionality supported by the Residential Programs System (RPS), as well as the central pharmacy system. DSHS' system will be hosted at Cerner's Kansas City data center, which has been named best in KLAS for Application Hosting (CIS/ERP/HIS) six times, most recently in 2014.
