UBIC Presents at Bio-IT World Conference and Expo

Highlighting the Results of a Test to Extract Semantic Relationships among Healthcare-Related Words

NEW YORK, April 24, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- UBIC, Inc. (Nasdaq:UBIC) (TSE:2158) ("UBIC" or "the Company"), a leading provider of international litigation support and big-data analysis services, participated in the Bio-IT World Conference & Expo 2015, which was held in Boston on April 21-23.

Jakob Halskov, Ph.D., Senior Technical Researcher at UBIC's Behavior Informatics Laboratories, presented a poster session titled "Extracting Biomedical Knowledge from Text Using Knowledge Patterns" and reported on the results of a test to extract biomedical knowledge from textual information. This test aimed at enhancing knowledge related to healthcare by extracting semantic relationships among healthcare-related words from large amounts of unstructured data (free descriptive text data) available on the Internet. A similar, previous test was successfully conducted with regard to English text data, and the latest test examined the applicability of this method to Chinese texts. By harnessing these test results, it may be possible to identify (1) side-effects that may occur resulting from the use of a certain drug and (2) drugs that may have caused certain symptoms. Believing that the knowledge gained through the test will be applicable to the fields of drug discovery and drug safety, the Behavior Informatics Laboratories continues to conduct research in this field.

The Bio-IT World Conference & Expo attracts more than 3,000 researchers in such fields as life sciences, drug discovery, clinical medicine and IT, as well as a number of companies in the IT, biomedical and drug discovery sectors. As a forum for exchange among people from industry, government and academia, Bio-IT World has been held annually since 2002.
