The practice offers a combination of chiropractic care, massage therapy and physical rehabilitation services to help patients recover following a workplace injury. According to chiropractor Dr. Angelo DiMaggio, this integrated approach to injury rehabilitation helps patients heal faster following an injury while experiencing less pain. The practice announced it is currently offering a $19 introductory special for new patients that includes a consultation, exam and adjustment.

Staten Island chiropractor Dr. Angelo DiMaggio is raising awareness about the benefits of chiropractic adjustments for treating work-related injuries, including back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome.

"When we hear the term 'workers compensation', we typically think about serious injuries at a manufacturing plant or a construction site," said Dr. DiMaggio. "The truth, however, is that many workplace injuries actually happen in the office. Injuries like back pain and carpal tunnel are due to poor office ergonomics and repetitive motions. Chiropractic care can make a significant difference for these injuries."

According to Dr. DiMaggio, many of these injuries are due to poor office ergonomics.

"When we spend eight hours a day sitting in an office chair, we can compress the lumbar spine and strain the cervical spine," said Dr. DiMaggio. "For example, leaning forward to get a better look at the computer screen or to reach the keyboard can lead to a condition called 'forward head posture', which can intensify neck pain."

Dr. DiMaggio stressed that seemingly simple adjustments to chair height or desk and computer position can help alleviate some pain by reducing stress on the spine. Physical therapy and chiropractic adjustments can also help, says the chiropractor.

"Chiropractic care works by creating space between compressed vertebra and alleviating nerve compression," said Dr. DiMaggio. "I always remind patients that the musculoskeletal system is comprised of many interconnected bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. What affects one of these joints or muscles can impact the entire system."

This includes carpal tunnel syndrome, which Dr. DiMaggio says is one of the most common workplace injuries and causes for pain in the workplace.

"The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway approximately the same size of the thumb through which the median nerve passes," said Dr. DiMaggio. "Any compression of this passageway can place pressure on the median nerve, triggering pain. Compression may occur from repetitive motions, like typing."

Dr. DiMaggio recommends hands-on adjustments to minimize pain and reduce swelling.

"Our goal with treatment is to address the root cause for pain while also minimizing contributing factors for long-lasting pain relief," said Dr. DiMaggio.
