MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 20, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- National Drive-thru day is July 24 on the calendar, but First Tennessee Bank celebrates it year-round. First Tennessee remains committed to the convenience of drive-thru lanes to let customers come as they are and stay on-the-go.

First Tennessee offers drive-thru lanes at 160 full-service financial centers plus 11 drive-thru-only convenience centers, a total of 520 lanes in all. And the lanes stay busy. Roughly 12 percent of the bank's transactions occur at drive-thrus, adding up to more than 140,000 transactions in a typical month. Drive-thru customers usually get treats for any kids or pets in the car. Drive-thru lanes remain an important option for customers – along with newer technology offered through ATMs, online and mobile banking and re-imagined financial centers – as First Tennessee offers the best combination of new-fangled technology and personal service.

To remind First Tennessee customers that the drive-thru lanes are open for business, financial centers are posting signs near the street with messages like: "Still in your pajamas? Use our drive-thru" or "Forgot your umbrella? Use our drive-thru."

In 1951 First Tennessee bought a parking lot near its headquarters in downtown Memphis and opened its first "motorbranch bank" – an island with two drive-up windows to accommodate motorists. First Tennessee followed the trail blazed in 1928 by the City Center Bank in New York, which opened the first business drive-thru for the convenience of busy clients. As Americans' passion for cars grew in the wake of World War II, Red's Giant Hamburger in Springfield, Mo., opened the first restaurant drive-thru in 1947. Jack in the Box, the first national drive-thru burger chain, created National Drive-thru Day in 1951. Today, Americans can access a host of services from the comfort of their cars, including drive-thru wedding chapels.

In honor of National Drive-thru Day, First Tennessee is encouraging customers to grab the kids, visit the nearest First Tennessee drive-thru lane, get some cash and then take the family to a drive-thru lunch. And they don't even have to get dressed up.
