Vital Images, Inc. Unveils New Lung Screening Program

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 25, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Vital Images, Inc., (Vital), a leading provider of enterprise imaging solutions, is pleased to announce the release of a robust Lung Screening solution, which will enable healthcare providers to manage the implementation of a successful lung cancer screening initiative.

With lung cancer as the new leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States, a need has arisen for the healthcare community to implement a comprehensive clinical strategy to reduce the burden of lung cancer and increase survival rates (American Cancer Society, Inc. 2015). Recognizing this need, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) cover annual CT lung cancer screening of current or former smokers at high risk of lung cancer.  Lung screening for individuals at high risk of lung cancer has the potential to dramatically improve survival rates by finding the disease at an earlier, more treatable stage.

Vital’s CT Lung Screening Program solution is a radiology tool and workflow system that will enable healthcare providers to manage a lung screening initiative by standardizing diagnosis of lung nodules and the presentation of treatment plans.  The solution’s custom reporting template with the American College of Radiology (ACR) approved Lung Imaging Reporting and Data System (LRADS) ensures key findings are communicated to clinicians for streamlined follow-up and treatment planning.  The consultative approach to education includes extensive on-site training and exclusive online education resources for technologists and physicians. Setting this solution apart is the Image Denoising software, which removes pixel noise from the image of the anatomy with an adaptive algorithm that smooths uniform tissue while preserving edges of the image.  Also available is a comprehensive, unified software solution to manage patients participating in lung screening programs.

“We are pleased to provide a comprehensive lung screening solution for our customers,” said Jim Litterer, President and CEO of Vital.  “Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the second most common cancer among both men and women in the United States.  Vital is committed to making screening more accessible to allow the possibility of detecting disease at earlier, more treatable stages.”
